Alcohol in Star Trek - From Romulan Ale to Saurian Brandy by Kurt Keller "Romulan Ale... Bones you know this is illegal." Alcohol has been in Star Trek since the The Original Series Episode "The Corbomite Maneuver" , when Balok of the First Federation first offered a beverage he called "Tranya" which he offered to the officers of the Enterprise. Tranya was later mention in Deep Space Nine episode "Facets", when Jadzia Dax mentioned that Curzon Dax was very frond of Tranya, it was said that it was a major export from the First Federation, it was stocked in Quark's Bar.
Tranya Romulan Ale Romulan Ale is probably the most recurring alcoholic beverage in Star Trek. Romulan Ale was first additionally introduced in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Kirk received a bottle of it from Dr. McCoy as a birthday present. Romulan Ale is supposedly an "instant drunk", meaning one sip and your intoxicated, which is one reason why it would be illegal in the Federation, but it is also possible because of the trade embargo against the Romulan Empire. Romulan Ale shortly became legal in 2379 when the embargo was lifted in during the Dominion War, but the embargo must have been reinstated because during Star Trek: Nemesis, Worf said "Romulan Ale should be illegal", and La Forge replies, "it is", so it must be currently illegal. The process of making Romulan ale hasn't been mentioned, but Doctor McCoy in Star Trek II, said "it takes this stuff awhile to ferment", other than that is all that was mentioned. Another interesting thing is that Romulan Ale might have been in TOS, in the episode "The Enterprise Incident", a blue drink was served by the Romulan Commander to Spock, she called it Kali-fal, it is unknown whether this is the Romulan term for Romulan Ale. Romulan Ale has always had a bluish tint, until Nemesis, when it appeared brownish.
Saurian Brandy Saurian Brandy first appeared in the TOS Episode "The Enemy Within", where the "Evil" Captain Kirk drank from a bottle of Saurian Brandy, it continued to reappear throughout TOS, and was recreated for Deep Space Nine and for The Next Generation. Not much is known about the Saurians themselves they appeared briefly in Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Saurian Brandy is suppost to be very potent, Dr. McCoy compared the nectar that was served by the women of Taurus II to be as potent as Saurian Brandy. Saurian Brandy appeared several times and was also seen in Star Trek VI,
Blood Wine Blood Wine first appeared in the TNG episode "A Matter of Honor", since then it has been the only Klingon beverage we've seen. It's a very potent drink, it's suppose to be twice as much alcohol in it as whiskey. This makes it very unpalatable to humans like most other Klingon food. Each officer of the Klingon defence force seems to carry at least a barrel or two of his favorite vintage. Martok himself favored the 2309 vintage, he Admiral Ross and Captain Sisko shared an entire barrel of it on Cardassia after the combined Federation, Klingon, Romulan invasion during the Dominion War. (DS9 "What You Leave Behind") Worf prefered his new and very sweet, according to the DS9 episode "Change of Heart". According to Michael Dorn, during shooting Blood Wine was little more than fruit punch and food coloring. There is nothing currently in Cannon that states the ingredients of Blood Wine, the Star Trek Cookbook, suggests that it's a mix of blood and sugar. A fan suggested recipe is as follows 1 oz Jose Cuervo® Especial gold tequila, 1 oz Captain Morgan® Original spiced rum, 1 dash grenadine syrup, 2 dashes Tabasco® sauce, cranberry juice, Add the tabasco sauce to an ice-filled beer mug/glass. Pour in the tequila, rum and grenadine, and fill with cranberry juice. Shake twice and serve. (Drinks Mixer.com2)
Aldebaran Whiskey - "It is… it is… It is green" Aldebaran Whiskey is a strong alcoholic beverage that is favored by Guinan. It is first introduced in the TNG episode Relics, which features James Doohan reprising his role of Scotty. In the episode Scotty is found on the USS Jenolin, a small transport craft found near a Dyson sphere. In order to save himself and the crew, Scotty programs the transporter to keep their molecules suspended inside the transporter. Scotty's signature is recovered and he comes aboard the Enterprise D. He goes to Ten-Forward and orders a Whiskey, when he drinks it he spats at it and says that it is not whiskey, Data comes up to him and asks him if there is a problem. After a brief conversation, Data says that the Whiskey Scotty has just drank, is synthehol. But he says that Guinan keeps a stock of alcoholic beverages. He reaches behind the bar and picks a bottle with a green liquid in it. Scotty askes what it is, Data responds "It is… it is… It is green." Later Scotty goes to the holodeck to see his "Old Ship" after a brief arguement with the computer, the intoxicated Scotty goes inside to revel in his memories. Picard enters the bridge and has a conversation with Scotty, he tells Scotty that the "green liquid" is actually Aldebaran Whiskey. Scotty askes him how he knew that, and he responds "Who do you think gave Guinan the bottle?". Aldebaran Whiskey returned to Star Trek in DS9. In "Prophet Motive", Quark discovers that Rom has taken a bottle of Aldebaran Whiskey from his private stock. Also some barrels of Aldebaran Whiskey can be seen in the various cargobays on Deep Space Nine.
